Where Can You Find Handmade Furniture And Built-Ins In Nova Scotia?

When some people think of handmade furniture and built-ins their minds go to the popular box stores. Many of the large box stores sell furniture that you assemble at home. And yes someone has actually touched the parts with their hands, most of that furniture is mass produced. Many people also think of built-ins in the same manner.

To a furniture maker a built-in is a custom piece made to fit a particular space. This could be for an office, a work space or for the home.

Ted Power is the owner, and master furniture maker, of Kinburn St Furniture in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. He has been making custom furniture and built-ins for the last twenty years. His journey began in Ontario where he was working as a photographer. He found a love for furniture and decided to attend Humber College where graduated with Honors with Distinction. Following his roots he moved back to Nova Scotia with his wife and daughter.

Ted’s experience in Ontario, especially in making of exotic and over the top wine cellars taught him that there is no cutting corners. The difference between handmade and mass produced furniture is that attention to detail and the construction methods.

Really good furniture doesn’t have metal fasteners. The best handmade furniture is made to fit together perfectly with glue. As the piece gets older it gets stronger. In addition mass produced furniture tends to loosen up over time and eventually is unusable.

Did you ever wonder why furniture made a hundred years ago by experts still stands the test of time. And it only appreciates in value. This is how Ted build’s his furniture. Every piece is special and unique.
